Why Dont You Dance Essay -- English Literature Raymond Carver
Why don't you dance The story is set in suburban America in the 1970'es. The main character, who remains nameless throughout the whole story, hast just moved his whole bedroom out into the street, lamps plugged in and all. The time is backed by the appliances - the boy turns on the TV set and makes minor adjustments, and you get the feeling, that he is turning the knobs to get a sharp picture. Also, in the seventies, everybody had a TV but it was still, as it is today, a rather big expense. The characters are: The man (the main character), the girl and the boy, who is the only character in our story to be called by his name, Jack. The man is middle-aged. In the beginning of the story, he brings out a lot of things from his home, and most of them are gifts. The nature of the things, suggests that they are wedding presents (a box of silverware, a record player, a muslin cloth). These are typically things you would get a couple of newly-weds for their shared home. Something has happened to his wife leading the man to put his life and sorrow of his lost wife on dis...

Organisational Culture
Aid in Changing and Improving the Company's Organizational Culture A Proposal to Change and Improve the Company's Organizational Culture All aspects of this proposal are based on a fictitious situation. I will summaries the aspects of the organizational culture and the aspects that could improve the culture of this fictitious organization. I currently hold the position of manager at a small, privately owned coffee bistro/book store. I have been an employee there for 3 years and have held the management title for 6 months. There are a total of 11 employees of differing sections. As cited by Greenberg an organizational culture Is the shared beliefs, expectations, or core values of the all the people within the organization (Schneider, 1990). The proposal outline will be structured around this premise. The organizational culture of the organization where I work There are 6 different kinds of cultures wealth organizations. They are sensitively to others, Interest in new ideas, willingness to take risks, value placed on people, openness of available communication options, and friendliness and congeniality Martin, 1996).I have observed that the organization for which I work embodies 4 of these, which I will discuss in detail in the final report. I also plan to discuss the influence that the owner has had on this culture as well as how the organization has what is referred to as a market culture. As manager I run the organization on behalf of the owner, who is the foremost authority. An organizations culture may be either strong or weak. I believe that we have the latter, as some employees have stated that they feel uninspired by the work that they do.It is my belief that the culture is a relatively healthy one because the employees are valued members of the team and their opinions are respected. However, it can be improved. How new employees are accommodated in my organization In my experience a new employee is always warmly welcomed and informed (by either the owner, manager or colleagues) of the policies, beliefs, and expectations of the organization. Each employee will have an orientation week (which includes necessary training) when they begin their employ.Other than the training, as anger I offer guidance as well as leading by example. How I could improve the culture of my organization I believe that I could assist in improving the culture by making use of the method of organizational memory. A statement of principle would lad In reinforcing the owners vowels. I also suggest that a more ethical organizational culture Is encouraged and will examine the Importance of this as well as how It can be accomplished through leadership and fellow employees. The concept of creatively within the Individual and am Is vital and should be encouraged, this may encourage any employee that feels the work Is not Inspiring or fulfilling. I also suggest regular staff meetings to keep all up to date with progress or hindrances. It Is Important to reward excellenc e and accept mistakes, ensuring that a culture of open-communication can be established (Matheson, 201 3) . Offering incentives to new employees by rewarding their good on to others. The rewards and incentives do not need any monetary support as there are many ways, which will be provided in the report, to do so without cost. Alcohol and Drugs
Alcohol and drugs have been for many years been abused by many people. Alcohol is a depressant that slows the function of the central nervous system.à It blocks some of the messages trying to get into the brain which consequently alters a personââ¬â¢s perceptions and emotions.People that I have known overuse alcohol have undergone intoxication.à When I meet them on the way they are just staggering, slur their speech because of these effects.Intoxication makes one to be aggressive and angry.à Due to this many alcohol users have ended in prison.à My neighbor who was alcoholic ended in jail for committing a serious offence of beating his child senseless. He was actually acting out of his own character.à The sentence was ten years in prison.Alcoholism can be divided into three main stages namely:Early stage of alcoholism Here a person depends on alcohol to affect their mood.à Most people at this level drink for relief from problems.à Most people experience gradual increase in tolerance thus increasing the quantity.à The body loses its ability to deal with high alcohol levels and as a result it leads to deteriorating body functions.Middle alcoholism stage The need and desire to drink becomes more intense.à Their tolerance decreases because of intoxications.à A few individuals recognize that there is a drinking problem but they are unable to stop.à This stage is characterized by hangovers, blackouts and stomach problems.End stage Alcoholism The alcoholic at this stage has become obsessed with drinking to the extent of excluding all other activities.à The mental and physical health of the alcoholic is deteriorating due to the damage of most body organs. The alcoholic will consequently suffer from malnutrition and if the alcoholic continues to dink alcohol will cause the death of the alcoholic in one way or another. These range from suicide, accidents, and damage of body organs etc.à Death is the final stage of alcoholisms. (Mar latt &Donovan 2005)I have actually noted through observation that there are adverse effects of drinking alcohol.à Most people who are alcoholic experience bad health effects, such as burnt hips.Too much alcohol within a short period of time may cause alcohol poisoning which is characterized by violent vomiting, extreme sleepiness unconsciousness, difficulty breathing, low blood sugar and even death. Alcohol users especially the young people are venerable to risks such as unsafe, unprotected sex resulting to pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases such as the deadly AIDS those results to the end of lives. The alcohol users I have known take risks that they might not normally if they are sober.à Most people have been killed in road accidents due to alcohol intoxication that hinders their judgment.à Others suffer physical injuries due to falling carelessly.I have tried to drift away from most of my friends who drink since I cannot comply with their irrational behaviors wh en they are drunk.à I always fear getting into conflicts with the alcohol users because they are usually aggressive and angry meaning they can injure me at any particular point.Drug abuse has increased in the contemporary world.à Different types of drugs are abused exposing the abusers to various risks.à Drugs are chemical or substances that change the way the body works.à They usually introduced into the body through swallowing, inhaling or injection them.à In the brain drugs may affect the normal functioning of the brain.

Hugo Munsterberg essay part 2Essay Writing Service
Hugo Munsterberg essay part 2Essay Writing Service Hugo Munsterberg essay part 2 Hugo Munsterberg essay part 2Hugo Munsterberg essay partà 1As we have previously mentioned, Munsterberg promoted the industrial psychology. The publication under the title ââ¬Å"Psychology and the Marketâ⬠(1909) can be regarded as the beginning of this activity. The article pointed out the areas of production in which psychology could be useful: vocational training, personnel management, etc.; the article also recommended to carry out intelligence tests, to assess the level of motivation of employees, and the impact of monotonous nature of the work on the results of work.Munsterberg had a number of serious researches in those universities where he worked as a consultant. The results were published in the book ââ¬Å"Psychology and Industrial Efficiencyâ⬠(1913). The book was so popular that entered the bestseller list. Munsterberg (1913) argued in the book that the best way to increase efficiency and productivity is to pick workersââ¬â¢ positions that match character and mental abilities of people who are working at them. Using the methods of psychological screening, such as intelligence tests and modeling of the production process, employers will be able to determine the knowledge, skills and abilities of prospective employees. Moreover, Munsterberg conducted various researches with people of different professions such as the shipââ¬â¢s captain, a tram driver, telephone operator and dealer, demonstrating how psychological screening techniques can improve the workââ¬â¢s productivity. As a result, Munsterberg outlined in ââ¬Å"Basics of Psychotechnicsâ⬠(1914) his views on the organization of vocational guidance and psychological services in the enterprise.Munsterberg was the first person who formulated the ââ¬Å"principle of instrumentalism,â⬠i.e. supposedly impartial attitude of psychologists to political and ethical aspects of their work. The researcher was more interested not in the political consequences of social conflic t in the enterprise, but in production results. For instance, he stated that in management, a lot of attention is paid to the problems associated with the effective use of materials and equipment, while mental state of mind is not taken into account in enough degree. Moreover, problems such as fatigue, monotony, demonstration of interest, education, enjoyment, and many such states associated with the psychological state of the individual were considered at unprofessional and low scientific level. As a result, the book ââ¬Å"Psychology and Industrial Efficiencyâ⬠became the answer to many of these problems.Munsterberg believed that industrial psychology and scientific management must unite their efforts, as they are based on the same principle: high working efficiency can not be achieved by excessive pressure on workers. Scientific methods of work organization must be combined with the satisfaction of spiritual needs; thus, people achieving high industrial efficiency would be a ble to achieve internal labor harmony. So, Munsterberg was one of the first advocates of psychology in industrial management; he highlighted the specific function of a psychologist because this specialist should be able to work in the place, where exists dissatisfaction of the workers in the absence of obvious deficiencies. To sum up, Hugo Munsterberg positively impacted on the development of many areas of psychology and his role was especially great in the development of such areas as career choices and professional selection. He was the first in a clear formulation of the two problems of professional suitability: 1) psychological analysis of the profession and detection of professionally important qualities; 2) psychological testing (psychodiagnostics), i.e., determining of the degree of severity of required professionally important qualities of the applicant with the appropriate tests. Munsterberg drew particular attention to the fact that not all people (especially young people) are able to adequately assess their abilities and make the right career choice. He developed a program of psychological study of professions, which included: gathering information from business leaders; it also included observations of psychologists (their role the scientist especially emphasized in the analysis of professions); experimental research, including a special study of the features of successful and unsuccessful activities of workers (method of ââ¬Å"polar groupsâ⬠). Moreover, Diamond (1974) stated that Munsterberg strongly emphasized the need for the establishment of special psychotechnical institutions and laboratories to put barrier to the spread of imaginary psychological means. He predicted that the industry will eventually take the initiative in bringing the work of professional psychologists by itself. In conclusion, we have explored the contribution of Hugo Munsterberg into psychology and closely related disciplines, and proved that Munsterberg was engaged in a variety of issues, which later became classics of psychology of labor. The term of ââ¬Å"psychotechnicsâ⬠Munsterberg understood as practical psychology that predicts the behavior of people and explores possibilities to influence this behavior in the public interest. The main shortcoming of psychotechnics was hidden in mechanistic understanding of activity as the ability to set properties, unchanging and unrelated. As we have stated, a set of short-term tests, which gave extremely incomplete information about some properties of the psyche, was used for the diagnosis of the human abilities. But even such fact cannot lessen the impact of Munsterberg on the development of psychology because this person opened new horizons for psychologists, showing people that it is always necessary to pay a huge attention to the sphere of human relations and introduction of knowledge into practice in real life situations.

Plato, St.Thomas, Descartes Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Plato, St.Thomas, Descartes - Essay Example The aim of this paper is to critically differentiate between the concepts of human person by Plato, St. Thomas and Rene Descartes. Plato believed that human person is basically a soul because itââ¬â¢s the most strongest of all and remains immortal. This clearly creates the relationship of mind and body to be of significance of hindrance. The human person is only able to reach to its core excellence within a group setting. According to Plato, body is the reason why the soul of a person will be distracted. Herein, it should be noted that the highest power that can be gained by the human person is none other than knowledge. Ultimately, Plato gave his viewpoint determining that the highest peak of knowledge i.e. power which can be gained by a human person is apprehension of the ideas. However, as noted above, soul is constantly distracted by the body in meeting the highest peak of knowledge. It should be noted that Plato has merely considered body to be the cage in which the soul gets locked. Plato has justified the comment of soul to gain eternal knowledge. At the point where one finds out that soul is the sole player of the power then knowledge is gained likewise. However, the fact remains that souls are merely imprisoned by the body that makes soul to undertake learning in a customized manner. Soul imprisoned within the body tends to create possibilities of learning other things as well. It is evident from the following quotation as well, ââ¬Å"The lovers of learning know that when philosophy gets hold of their soul, it is imprisoned in and clinging to the body, and that it is forced to examine other things through it as through a cage and not by itself, and that it wallows in every kind of ignorance1â⬠. The question arises that at what point can the soul be free from the body where the answer is clear, at death. Body becomes dead but soul remains for which it can fulfill the tasks that it need to do during the life course. In order to fully practice th e power, it is much significant for the soul to get freedom from being caged in the body. The most famous saying of Plato inhibited that those who practice philosophy and self-learning are basically yearning and practicing to become dead. This is in context of the previous statement where soul is to get powerful at the time of death because it is free from body. It will not be incorrect to state that Plato was basically a dualist. His viewpoints about human person, power inhibiting and knowledge etc. are quiet extreme for its own kind. Considering the appetites that are among the parts of soul, Plato marked that appetite is a power that sorts the need and desires of a human person differently. This makes evident that soul is basically searching its way to fulfill appetites. For some, it can be the intellect while for others it is the shelter that keeps them under an entitlement. This also interweaves the ideal of scientific knowledge i.e. in order to meet the appetite; a person may fulfill the chronology of societal bounding based upon science2. Another dimension to look at human person and everything in its concerned pattern is the view of St. Thomas. It should be noted here that St. Thomas also considered human person to be a soul. However, he did not consider body to be utterly invaluable. He has used a comparison method to discuss human person with animals. He noted that body in which the human soul is embodied is basically a way to differentiate humans from animals. At the

As was discussed previously, VectorCal is an already established firm that provides security services to governmental departments, the private sector, and individuals through drone navigation. DroveIn is also intended to perform theses duties, in addition to the provision of services that are not available from VectorCal. These services include the development of more user-friendly, wholesome, and affordable drones and the creation of a long-term relationship with the customers using a quantitative model (Deberg, 2011). Just like VectorCal, my company (DroneIn) will most probably develop its drones using iron and steel, and other manufactured items produced in the United States. Thus, these two firms may benefit from the Buy American Requirements in the following ways: 1) They are profit-making organizations and are thus, not impacted by these requirements.
